Before you start
- Buy only from official Trezor channels or trusted retailers to avoid tampered devices.
- Have a pen and the recovery card (or metal backup) ready to write your seed phrase — do not store it digitally.
- Use a clean, malware-free computer. Prefer a freshly installed browser and avoid public Wi‑Fi for initial setup.
Step 1 — Unbox & Inspect
- Open the package and inspect the tamper-evident seal and device packaging for signs of tampering.
- Verify the model and serial number match documentation included in the box.
Step 2 — Visit trezor.io/start and install Trezor Suite
- On your computer, open a browser and go to trezor.io/start. Download the official Trezor Suite desktop app or use the web suite as instructed on the site.
- Install and run Trezor Suite. When prompted, connect your Trezor device with the provided cable.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to install the device firmware if necessary; only accept firmware signed by Trezor.
Tip: Trezor Suite will usually detect if firmware is missing or outdated and walk you through a verified installation.
Step 3 — Create a new wallet
- Select Create a new wallet in Trezor Suite and agree to initialize the device as a new wallet (not a recovery).
- The device will generate your recovery seed — write each word on the provided recovery card in order. Double-check spelling and ordering.
- Confirm the seed on the device when prompted; do not photograph or copy the seed to any digital medium.
Warning: If anyone asks for your recovery seed, do not share it. Whoever has the seed can control your funds.
Step 4 — Set PIN and optional passphrase
- Choose a PIN for device unlocking — select a PIN you can remember but that is not easily guessable.
- Optionally enable a passphrase for an additional hidden wallet. Understand that a passphrase acts as an extension of your seed — if lost, it cannot be recovered.
Layering PIN + passphrase adds protection, but increases responsibility for secure storage of secret inputs.
Step 5 — Add accounts & receive funds
- In Trezor Suite, add the coin accounts you plan to use (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum).
- Use the "Receive" flow to generate an address. Always verify the address on the Trezor device screen before sharing it with senders.
- For larger transfers, send a small test amount first to confirm the address and network fees.
Ongoing maintenance & best practices
- Keep firmware and Trezor Suite updated. Read release notes and verify updates originate from Trezor.
- Store your recovery seed in a secure offline location — consider a steel/metal backup for long-term durability.
- Use a hardware authenticator or password manager for related accounts, and enable strong 2FA where available.
- Be cautious of phishing — always verify domain names and bookmarks before entering sensitive info on websites.
Troubleshooting & resources
- If firmware update fails, retry on a different USB port or cable and ensure Trezor Suite is up to date.
- If you lose your device but have your recovery seed, you can restore your wallet on a new Trezor device or compatible wallet that supports the same seed standard.
